Greetings cork-poppers!

August is a fantastic time to head into wine country no matter what region you’re closest to!  The rapidly growing grapes are on their way to peak ripeness, filling with sugar, acid, minerals and water that will soon be harvested and turned into glorious wine.  The vineyards are most lush during this time of year. So don’t miss out on booking a summer wine country tour today.

This month we’re excited to highlight four distinct wine growing regions and their AVA’s (American Viticulture Areas), which you’ll love to tour in August:

Napa Valley ~ Calistoga, St. Helena, Oakville/Rutherford, Yountville, Napa

In Napa Valley you will find many grape varietals being grown and used in wine making. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to be highly popular varietals here, but don’t limit your palate in this extraordinary wine region. The number of beautiful wineries and breathtaking views will seem endless!

Rocky Mountains ~ Colorado

Two AVA’s exist here, Grand Valley in Mesa County (near the city of Grand Junction) and West Elks in Delta County (near the quaint town of Paonia). The most popular varietals in this scenic region are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Riesling, Viogner and Chardonnay. Here you will find 100+ welcoming wineries to choose from.

Great Lakes ~ 8 US States: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and the province of Ontario in Canada

There is an amazing amount of winemaking history in this region, and today it’s gaining more and more attention. This area is the home of America’s oldest wine industry dating back to the 1600s. Very interesting native grapes can be found including Catawba, Delaware, Norton and Muscadine. More popular varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Syrah. Ontario has a history of German immigrants bringing the art of making ice wine to Canada. The ideal growing conditions here offer visitors delicious ice wines to taste. Ice wine is made from grapes left on the vines to freeze in the winter.

Upstate New York Finger Lakes Wine Trails

In this region you will find 4 Wine Trails boasting many wineries in each. Canandaigua Wine Trail, Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, Seneca Lake Wine Trail, and Keuka Wine Trail. In the Canandaigua Wine Trail, you’ll find the New York Wine and Culinary Center that has gained much popularity, offering visitors the chance to taste wines from many Finger Lakes wineries in one place.

The best wine tasting tips I’ve offered friends and family for years are pretty basic.

  • Don’t overdo it. Only plan to visit 3-5 wineries per day. Take your time, enjoy the wine.
  • If your group has a small range of wines they like, familiarize yourself with which wines are made at the wineries you choose. With that said, the adventure of trying new varietals is a lot of fun.
  • Wine regions have a combination of small production, family run wineries along with the larger producers. Some are by “appointment only” and some require reservations for groups. It’s best to plan ahead.
  • “Tula, eat something!” Don’t spend your day wine tasting with no food and water. There are top-notch restaurants to explore in wine country and many wineries offer food themselves.
  • Don’t be afraid to spit. It may seem uncivilized but this is a very acceptable practice when tasting. You get to enjoy the wine without the side effects of alcohol. Just ask for a spit bucket.
  • Consider hiring chauffeured transportation like a town car or sedan service, a stretch limo, or a party bus for larger groups – so you and your friends can have a great time without worrying about directions and a designated driver. Limo and private car service prices can be surprisingly affordable. Ground transportation companies often offer special wine tour deals, so finding an affordable ride to a winery is easy.

I wish you wonderful winery adventures and discoveries this August. Gather your friends, family and coworkers, and plan the most comfortable, luxurious and safe way I know how to explore wine country, with us at www.Limos.com.

Preparing for Prom, From “His” Perspective

By Junior Magallon, Senior, Del Sol High School, Las Vegas & Guest Blog Contributor

Prom night is one of the most anticipated nights for high school students each year. The chance to share the evening with my beautiful date and friends is something we’ll remember for the rest of our lives. That’s why planning for prom wisely is so important, including:

  1. Get a perfect prom date (duh)
  2. Dress nicely (a.k.a. “tuxedo T-shirt”)
  3. Eat well (perfect before-the-prom dinner)
  4. Party with the friends (while keeping the parents unworried)

Step 1 – Perfect Date: My prom experience started by deciding who to ask to the big dance. I was nervous about asking my date, so I did some research on the best way to ask a girl to prom … because let’s face it, girls expect the proposal to be creative, genuine and somewhat cute.

Here are some ideas I found for asking a girl to a dance:

  • Plan a scavenger hunt
  • Have a small group for friends spell out prom in her front yard
  • Fill her car with sticky notes asking her to prom
  • Create a huge poster asking her to prom and include flowers

However, to me all those ideas were overrated. So I decided to ask my date by embarrassing her instead. I thought it was a foolproof plan…but I guess I was wrong.

I know the girl I wanted to ask to prom hated monkeys. I know this because one day while at the zoo, we were taking pictures when a monkey pulled her hair and scared her. She was really embarrassed but all of our friends got a good laugh. She made me delete the photos and promise never speak of the situation again. Maybe that should have been my first clue that this was a bad idea, but I digress.

The moment arrived and I surprised her at school with a bunch of monkey gear, including a bracelet, stuffed animal and sign that read, “Be My Primate Prom Date”. To my surprise, she rejected my proposal but eventually came around and said yes.

Step 2 – Perfect Tuxedo: Phase one was complete! Now my nervousness has now turned to renting a tuxedo. It’s important to wear the same the color as your date. And the corsage has to be perfect as well. I know she loves roses so I’m planning on buying her a white rose corsage to match her dress.

Step 3 – Perfect Dinner: Next is planning a nice dinner for before prom. I’m undecided on where to take her since we’re going with a group but I’m leaning toward a restaurant where I can surprise her with a banana split … sorry, I digressed again.

Step 4 – Perfect Party Ride: No prom night would be complete without booking a party bus for all of our friends. I was Googling for a prom limo and found the perfect ride on Limos.com, where I could compare prices and review (and make my parents happy with my hard research work!). So now, not only will we be able to get to-and-from the restaurant in style, we’ll be able to cruise the strip for a couple hours after the dance – where I hope there will be a little monkeying around … with good friends on our limo bus … get your mind out of the gutter!

And – Step 5 – Perfect Prom! Students anticipate prom for four years. Nothing throughout high school can top that night. It’s not the cute way you ask your date to prom, but the little things you do to prepare yourself for the night. To some it’s just another day, but to me it’s the day I’ve been looking forward to since my freshman year. I can’t wait for prom.

Limos.com Prom Video Competition – Vote for Your Fave!

UPDATE: The voting for this video competition ends at 12:00 p.m. PST on Friday, April 27th.

It’s that time a year again when high school students from all over the country flock to Limos.com to check prom limo rental prices. But nothing beats a free limo, and that’s exactly what we’re giving a few lucky students this week.

Earlier this year, a group of film class students from River City High School in Sacramento, CA came to us with an idea to create a series of promotional videos for Limos.com. We loved the idea and agreed to reward the winning team a free stretch for their efforts.

We had a great time working with these students and thank them for having some fun with us. Below are the two finalists – and we’d like your help choosing a winner:

“Hey Girl, You Wanna go to Prom?”
“The Limos.com Guy”
Help us pick a winner by voting for your favorite video below. Or share your fave on Facebook and Twitter.
